Asia and Europe meet in Copenhagen for education summit
[05.05.2011]Education will be a topic discussed with many accents when participants from 46 Asian and European countries meet in Copenhagen for “Asia Europe Meeting for Ministers of Education”.
Lifelong Learning, mobility, business cooperation and quality assurance are topics on the agenda when ministers, officials and practicians from Asian and Europe convene in Copenhagen to discuss ways of working together. The occasion is the third edition of “Asia Europe Meeting for Ministers of Education” (ASEMME 3) to be held on 9 and 10 May 2011.
Delegations arrive in the Danish capital on Sunday 8 May before embarking on two days of visits to Danish Educational Institutions, plenary sessions and opportunities to strengthen ties through the discussion of the event’s main topics:
• Quality assurance and recognition
• Engaging Business and Industry in Education
• Balanced mobility
• Lifelong Learning
Apart from the plenary sessions, the countries will be able to arrange bilateral meetings to discuss agreements one-on-one.
Introduction to Denmark
Denmark’s role as host was announced at the previous ASEMME held in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2009. On this occasion, participants were introduced to Danish hallmarks and political education objectives in a video presenting the Danish education system and labour market. - The Asia-Europe Meeting was inaugurated in the late nineties as informal meetings between heads of state from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the EU with the purpose of strengthening cooperation between the two regions.
- The list of participants has expanded since, and now also includes China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Russia.
- The political agenda has widened its focus too. Now there are meetings for Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Ministers of Finance and Ministers for Education.
- ASEMME stands for Asia Europe Meeting for Ministers for Education.
