A new agreement between Denmark and Iceland shall strengthen the instruction in Danish and Danish culture in Iceland. The agreement is a continuation of the good cooperation in the field of education between the two countries.

Denmark and Iceland have signed a new agreement on cooperation that will strengthen the Danish language classes in Iceland. The agreement runs from 2011 to 2014 and continues the good cooperation between Iceland and Denmark in the field of education.

Increase of interest in the Danish language

The Danish Minister for Children and Education, Christine Antorini, and the Icelandic Minister of Education, Science and Culture, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, signed the agreement on 2 November 2011. This event took place during the Nordic Council of Ministers’ meeting for Education and Research at Christiansborg.

“The agreement proofs that both countries wish to continue and strengthen the good Nordic cooperation,” Christine Antorini said.

The two ministers are signing the cooperation agreement at Christiansborg.

The purpose of the cooperation project is to support the Danish language classes in the Icelandic school system and thereby among other things strengthen the pupils’ verbal proficiency in Danish.

The agreement shall also present Danish culture in the Icelandic school system, increase the interest in the Danish language and strengthen the consciousness of the importance of knowledge and command of the Danish language. The agreement is a continuation of three former Danish-Icelandic agreements on cooperation and a project on strengthening the instruction in Danish and Danish culture in Iceland.

The project is funded by the Ministry of Children and Education in Denmark and the Ministry of Education in Iceland.
